Esteemed broadcast icons Mike Enriquez, Mel Tiangco, Korina Sanchez, and Julius Babao along with the eternally youthful pop singer Gary Valenciano have smitten the hearts of millions of Filipino TV viewers for their near magical presence on air and for keeping their heads and reputations afloat in an industry known for controversy and banality. For eight consecutive years, they were faithfully voted by Anak TV jurors as the most credible, wholesome, and exemplary on television. In 2011, they were elevated to the Hall of Fame for consistently topping the polls.
This year, three more personalities were similarly elevated. Two more respectable broadcasters, Jessica Soho and Bernadette Sembrano, and pop star Sarah Geronimo joined the august league. It seemed that right after the announcement, other Makabata stars started counting the years they have been voted into the circle, a good number of them with a moist eye on the Hall of Fame.
Getting into the Makabata circle is a rather long, knotty, and tough road starting with a top-of-mind nomination by jurors in the grassroots. Only one name, from among the firmament of male and female aspirants on television, can be listed. The personalities who garnered the most mention are shortlisted.
From the initial choice of thousands, a more professional, fussy, and arguably perceptive body of assessors screens the finalists, and whittles down the number to ten. The Makabata ten should embody what the various jury groups consider as “worthy to be emulated by children.”
This year’s Makabata stars are: Anthony Taberna, Angel Locsin, this year’s topnotcher in the male category Coco Martin, Charo Santos, Jodi Sta. Maria, Judy Ann Santos, Kim Atienza, Kara David, Noli de Castro, Karen Davila, Richard Yap, Ryan Agoncillo, Kim Chiu (the female topgrosser), Ted Failon, Vic Sotto, and Vicky Morales. Joining them are newcomers Dingdong Dantes, Daniel Padilla, Kathryn Bernardo, and Marian Rivera.
